What Is Synthroid. In patients with normal thyroid levels, doses of SYNTHROID used daily for hormone replacement are not helpful for weight loss. Larger doses may result in serious or even life- threatening events, especially when used in combination with certain other drugs used to reduce appetite. Do not use SYNTHROID if you have uncorrected adrenal problems. Taking too much levothyroxine has been associated with increased bone loss, especially in women after menopause. Once your doctor has found your specific SYNTHROID dose, it is important to have lab tests done, as ordered by your doctor, at least once a year. Foods like soybean flour, cottonseed meal, walnuts, and dietary fiber may cause your body to absorb less SYNTHROID from the gastrointestinal tract. Grapefruit juice may cause your body to absorb less levothyroxine and may reduce its effect. Let your doctor know if you eat these foods, as your dose of SYNTHROID may need to be adjusted. Use SYNTHROID only as ordered by your doctor. Take SYNTHROID as a single dose, preferably on an empty stomach, one- half to one hour before breakfast. Products such as iron and calcium supplements and antacids can lower your body’s ability to absorb levothyroxine, so SYNTHROID should be taken 4 hours before or after taking these products. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or are thinking of becoming pregnant while taking SYNTHROID. Your dose of SYNTHROID may need to be increased during your pregnancy. It may take several weeks before you notice an improvement in your symptoms. Tell your doctor if you are taking any other drugs, including prescription and over- the- counter products. Tell your doctor about any other medical conditions you may have, especially heart disease, diabetes, blood clotting problems, and adrenal or pituitary gland problems. The dose of other drugs you may be taking to control these conditions may have to be changed while you are taking SYNTHROID. If you have diabetes, check your blood sugar levels and/or the glucose in your urine, as ordered by your doctor, and immediately tell your doctor if there are any changes. Hypothyroidism often goes undiagnosed because the symptoms resemble those of other problems. According to a report from the University of Maryland Medical Center, as many as 1. Americans may have slightly underactive thyroid functioning. Gaining weight? Could be those late night snacks. Chalk that up to your volatile marriage. But in reality, any of these symptoms could be hypothyroidism. Treating Hypothyroidism. Detecting hypothyroidism is fairly simple. All you need is a blood test that measures levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which is what your pituitary gland produces when your thyroid isn’t making enough thyroid hormone. High TSH levels means your pituitary is signaling your thyroid to secrete more thyroid hormone. Treating hypothyroidism requires you to replace the thyroid hormone your body normally makes. Synthroid is what experts call true hormone replacement therapy because you are using medicine to replace what your body no longer makes but should be making. Synthroid is generally taken for life. Before taking Synthroid, you should notify your doctor about any medical conditions you have, such as heart disease or diabetes, and any medications you take. Certain medications such as anticoagulants (warfarin) can become more potent in the presence of Synthroid, while insulin or sulfonylureas may be become more or less effective. Antacids that contain aluminum, calcium or magnesium such as Gaviscon, Maalox and Mylanta, can make Synthroid less effective. The same is true of sucralfate (Carafate), which is prescribed for peptic ulcers, andsimethicone (Gas. X), an over- the- counter remedy for gas. Iron and calcium can also interfere with the absorption of Synthroid. If you need to take these medications or supplements, take them 4 hours before or after you take Synthroid. You should also point out to your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant or are breastfeeding. A significant number of Synthoid users find they have to ask their doctors to adjust their dosage. It’s important, therefore, that those on this thyroid hormone monitor whether they are having any side effects from the medicine and whether their original symptoms are abating. Luckily for me, my initial dosage has worked well. A follow- up blood test 6 weeks after I started Synthroid showed my TSH levels were back to normal. Many people aren’t so lucky. Consider my friend MJ who spent years trying to figure out why she felt so anxious and tired. Doctors eventually determined she was taking too much Levoxyl, another synthetic thyroid hormone treatment, and it was making her jumpy and wearing her out. Reducing the dosage helped, but she’s worried how the extra Levoxyl all those years may have affected her bones. Meanwhile, my friend Cheryl spent years trying to figure out why her TSH levels are so high when she’s already taking a relatively high dose of Synthroid. Should she instead take Armour, which is a thyroid hormone extracted from pig thyroids? Ultimately, what worked for her was taking levothyroxine with aqueous selenium and liquid iodine. Last year, she began taking the selenium and iodine every other day. Iodine is essential to the production of thyroid hormone, while selenium helps the body convert T4, the inactive form of thyroid hormone into T3, the active form. Be Smart With Synthroid. If you have hypothyroidism, taking Synthroid needs to become a part of your daily routine. To keep blood levels on an even keel, you should also take it at the same time every day. Ideally, you should take Synthroid on an empty stomach since food can delay absorption. I take it in the middle of the night, when I know I won’t be eating anything. In fact, it’s best to wait an hour after taking your pill before eating. Certain foods can inhibit absorption of Synthroid, too. A diet rich in fiber for instance, may decrease the amount your body absorbs. Foods and nutrients such as calcium, iron and soy can also interfere with absorption. If you must eat these foods or take these supplements, make sure to wait at least one hour after taking your medication before doing so. The good news is that Synthroid doesn’t usually cause serious side effects or stress on the kidneys or liver. Although some hair loss can be a side effect in the first few months of treatment, most of the time Synthroid improves hair growth. Most people, including me, get their Synthroid from their local drugstore or a mail- order pharmacy. But if you want to buy Synthroid online, make sure to get a prescription from your doctor and use a licensed pharmacy, which means you’ll have access to a licensed pharmacist in case you have questions. Friedman echoes this advice and encourages patients to read the site’s privacy and security policies to ensure their information is kept private. In addition, he recommends that you always ask for Synthroid and not its generic version, levothyroxine. Other Options. While Synthroid is the drug of choice for people with hypothyroidism, patients do have other treatment options. Many alternative doctors prescribe Armour because it comes from the thyroids of pigs and is believed to be more natural and more similar to human thyroid hormone. I remember waking up on the fourth day after starting this in complete amazement by the fact that my fingers felt skinny. I’m not sure if it was the amount of salt I ate or what, but my fingers and hands have felt fat for the last year – this alone was enough to keep me going. For the sake of this overview, I will not go into any detail on supplements (as I have yet to learn much about them), and will only briefly touch on exercising. Instead, I’ll focus on optimizing diet for rapid weight loss. So how did I lose this weight so quickly? I kept my blood sugar from spiking by following a fat loss program built for me. It was quite similar to the slow carb diet. The methods I used were from the advice I found from a variety of locations, surrounding foods and how diet alone can make for some amazing weight loss. These were the key changes I made that I know helped with the rapid weight loss. I ate a big, high- protein breakfast. I love my breakfasts. It’s crazy to think that I could lose 1. It’s great though because in the evening when I sometimes get cravings, I will just remind myself how awesome breakfast is going to be. I included a picture to the right of a typical breakfast that I will eat. It’s three fried eggs, 4- 6 pieces of bacon, and fried mushrooms, onions, and beans. Delicious. Lets be honest, there were mornings that I just didn’t have it in me to make this. For those mornings I would fall back to just 2- 3 hardboiled eggs, or a single hardboiled egg and a protein shake made with water + whey protein isolate. Since I work from home, I can typically take the time to make a big breakfast, but probably 1/6 days I would have to fall back to the quick breakfast. Remove most dairy products. This wasn’t a huge issue for me. I haven’t drank much milk since junior high, and although I do enjoy cheese on almost everything it was easy enough to give up. Luckily, I could still use butter to cook with, and if you are like the many people that love cream in their coffee – this is okay as well as long as it’s heavy cream and not milk. Cheese is a big part of my cheat days as I explain below. Water, Coffee, or Tea. This was one of the biggest challenges for me. That said it is crazy how fast you can lose weight quickly if you simply cut out drinking unnecessary calories. Admittedly, I’ve historically enjoyed a beer or two over dinner at home – and even more than one or two if out with some friends. Although I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a beer a night, or a glass of wine a night, I know the former is not great for losing weight. If all you have is two weeks to lose weight, you’re going to have to be very strict with this rule. Luckily you can still drink any water- based drink such as coffee and tea, so it’s not all bad. I usually have a huge glass of ice cold water plus one or two large cups of coffee in the morning to kick start my day. I often use cinnamon to flavour my coffee – it’s a great tip for those of you that really enjoyed adding milk. No white carbohydrates. In fact, anything that is white or can be white. So no pastas, no rice, no breads, no oatmeal, no potatoes, etc. However, I still ate a ton of carbohydrates. I just ate better high- fiber carbs such as black beans, kidney beans, and lentils. The latter I didn’t really enjoy, so most of my meals were made up of beans. The picture to the left is an example of what I would eat for supper. This night I had a spread of black beans, cooked frozen veggies, and sliced ham. I basically substituted the ham for any other meat – chicken, beef, or pork mostly – and alternated between black and kidney beans. Note – if you find your food getting bland, try using mustard and pepper. For lunch, I’ll often take 1/2- 1 can of tuna, 1- 2 cups of frozen veggies, and a big scoop of bean, cook in the microwave, add a couple squeezes of mustard and pepper and shake. Moderate 2. 0 minute weight resistance twice per week. When I was reading the Four Hour Body, it really got me interested in how the body works and how it deals with exercise, food, etc. This is one thing that I think really helped me – especially during my cheat days. I will do a light to moderate 2. Bicep curl x 1. 5Air squats x 5. Military shoulder press x 1. Wide arm pushups x 2. Against- the- wall tricep extensions. As many close- grip pull ups as possible. Calf raises x 3. 0The goal of the workout was to promote food storage to muscle instead of fat – this is especially important during your cheat days. During my cheat day I will look to do the air squats + tricep extensions even if I’m eating out. I didn’t go to the gym at all for this, instead I just took a couple old 2. If you don’t have a pull up bar don’t buy one, simply exchange the exercise for a back row or seated back fly exercise. I also don’t own a weight bench so no need to spend your money on that. What I’ve learned since losing even more weight is that these workouts are pretty important if you want to lose weight fast. They aren’t necessary but they certainly do help shed some extra pounds by keeping the fat off, especially on your cheat day. I gave myself one cheat day. I say one cheat day, because I wanted to illustrate the fact that this diet can be used for people wanting to know how to lose weight in 2 weeks. If you are only using this as a fast way to lose weight, then you’ll only want to indulge in one cheat day during your two- week period. However, I now give myself every Saturday as a cheat day. I believe that this cheat day is important for a number of reasons. Firstly, the science behind it suggests that if you go for too long on a limited- calorie diet (which this isn’t, however I noticed that it took me much, much less food to fill me up when I ate well, so you tend to naturally eat less on this diet) that your metabolism will shift to a lower gear in order to compromise for the lower intake of calories. By cheating one day and spiking the number of calories you consume, it will keep your metabolism from doing this – and allow you to maintain your high metabolic rate throughout the week. Personally, I find the cheat day important because it gives you something to look forward to. This diet is a huge change from most Westerners’ lifestyles. With the diet comes a lot of cravings, especially in the beginning. I would make a little note of anything that I was craving and made sure I went out and bought it Saturday morning. For example, this is what my first cheat day looked like: Breakfast – bacon and eggs with hash- browns, toast, a ton of ketchup, and a fruit smoothie. Snack – Full bag of All Dressed potato chips and a large bag of sugar candy (Cherry Blasters)Lunch – Entire box of extra cheesy Kraft Dinner. Snack – 2 large Caramilk chocolate bars. The Mediterranean diet is a heart-healthy eating plan that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds, and healthy fats. Try some of the tips below. Talk to your doctor or a dietician if you have questions. Make vegetables, fruits, and whole grains the base of your meals. Your meals should center around these foods. Choose a wide mix of fruits and vegetables, and prepare them in simple ways. For example, you can roast your vegetables in the oven. If you saut. Switch to whole- grain breads, pastas, and cereals. Try different whole grains, such as brown rice, quinoa, and millet. Use unsaturated fats instead of saturated fats. Make good choices about which fats you eat. When cooking, choose unsaturated fats, such as olive or canola oil. Limit your intake of saturated fats, such as butter, margarine, and coconut oil. Choose low- fat dairy products. Choose fresh, healthy snacks. Nuts are good snacks and a natural source of unsaturated fat. Eat a small handful of walnuts, cashews, almonds, or pistachios. Spread some all- natural peanut butter (with no added sugar or fillers) on a slice of whole- grain bread. Fresh vegetables are another good option. Eat them with hummus or olive oil instead of sour cream or cheese. Get most of your protein from plant sources, poultry, and fish. During the week, try eating mostly vegetarian meals. You can combine lentils, beans, or chickpeas with whole grains and vegetables. Once or twice a week, bake or grill fish, such as salmon, trout, or tuna. When you eat meat, choose poultry instead of red meat. Keep your portions at 3 to 5 oz. Avoid red meat, sausage, bacon, and other high- fat meats. Raise a glass. On the Mediterranean diet, you can consume a moderate amount of wine. Red wine may have more health benefits than white wine. Women (or men over age 6. I get a lot of emails about the “Eat Right For Your Type” diet, also known as the blood type diet, which asserts that specific optimal diets exist for each blood type. In this post, I’ll take a look at whether there’s anything to this idea, and whether you should change the way you’re eating based on whether you’re Type O, A, B or AB. The proposed diets all tend to be pretty decent, whole foods- based ways of eating, and they’re all better than the standard American diet of industrial processed junk, but differences do exist. Here’s the basic breakdown of all four blood type diets: Type O (PDF): The “original” blood type and the oldest one, proponents claim it evolved among hunter- gatherers in response to their (Primal) diet of animals and plants. People with this blood type do best on meat, fish, and certain fruits and vegetables while limiting starches and omitting grains (especially wheat), beans, legumes, and dairy. It’s pretty much a strict paleo approach. Type A (PDF): The agricultural blood type, proponents claim it arose after the advent of agriculture. People with this blood type do best on vegetables, fruits, grains, beans, legumes, and limited fish. They should avoid meat, wheat, and dairy. It’s basically a vegetarian diet. Type B (PDF): The “nomad” type, proponents claim it arose amongst pastoralists raising animals for meat and milk. People with this blood type do best with lamb, mutton, rabbit, and most other meats (except for chicken and pork), dairy, beans, and vegetables. They should avoid wheat, olives, tomatoes, and corn. Type AB (PDF): The “generalist” blood type. People with this blood type can eat many meats, some seafood, dairy, beans, grains, and fruit, but they should limit kidney beans, lima beans, seeds, corn, beef, chicken, and buckwheat. I see a few things wrong with their reasoning: First, they’ve got the anthropology all mixed up. Type O blood isn’t the oldest blood type, nor was it formed by human dietary patterns. The most recent research has found that Types A, B, and O arose almost 2. In fact, if anything, it’s type A blood that’s the oldest. Second, if type A blood arose in response to agriculture, why would the Australian aboriginal diet of meat, marrow, and foraged plant foods, or the Sami diet of reindeer blood, meat, and milk and fatty fish both give rise to a preponderance of type A blood carriers? Type A is supposed to be founded on agriculture – grains, beans, with very little animal products. If a high- animal foods diet selects against type A blood, why does it flourish in these populations? Third, the justification given for eliminating certain foods from these diets is that the lectins found in them trigger agglutination (clumping) of the red blood cells when consumed by someone with the wrong blood type. So, lectins found in olives are supposed to cause agglutination in Type As, lectins found in grains are supposed to cause agglutination in Type Os, and so on. Proponents claim that specific lectins are selective in their tendency to agglutinate – they interact differently with the various blood types. This supposed selective agglutination is the proximate arbiter of whether a food belongs in a particular blood type’s ideal diet or not, but it doesn’t even exist. The actual research suggests that lectin agglutination is non- selective with regard to blood type. If a particular lectin agglutinates, it generally agglutinates across all blood types. If a lectin is harmful to one blood type, it’s harmful to all. That said, the blood type diet folks do highlight an interesting observation: the individual blood types are often associated with different rates of certain diseases. Type Os have a curious relationship to certain infectious diseases. His theory is based on the idea that each blood group has its own unique antigen marker. O blood type. Upon reviewing twelve separate studies, researchers determined that type O blood confers protection against pancreatic cancer. Type B was most strongly associated with pancreatic cancer, followed by types AB and A, respectively. Despite the results, “the mechanism by which these SNPs influence risk is unknown.” It could be that “these SNPs may act as markers of allelic variants in nearby genes, and the ABO antigens may not be directly involved in” the development of pancreatic cancer at all. Then, once a person has pancreatic cancer, type O confers a significant survival benefit over the other blood types. This may be explained by the observation in animal studies that the immune systems of types A and B seem to have a harder time at “noticing” and “destroying” cancer cells. Type Os are also less likely to get gastric cancer, despite their increased susceptibility to H. They’re a big reason why I avoid most grains, beans, and legumes – not only do they contain large numbers of lectins, but the lectins they have tend to be particularly proficient at disrupting and navigating the gut barrier. And yes, some people seem more sensitive to dietary lectins than others, but I see no evidence that a person’s lectin sensitivity – and thus ideal dietary composition – is determined by their blood type. It’s an attractive idea, the notion that we can determine someone’s optimal diet and offer them perfect health and protection from disease simply by checking their blood type.
It’s just not a realistic one, according to the available evidence. In the end – and this might be the most important part of this whole thing – the blood type diet “works” because it eliminates processed food regardless of blood type, removes wheat from the diets of people with blood types A, B, and O (which takes care of the vast majority of the population of the world), and recommends that most people (type O is the most common blood type) eat a diet based on meat and plants with little to no grains, beans, sugar,and legumes.
